|
- The goal of Jamaican Self-Help’s Global Education programme is to advance the knowledge, awareness and understanding of Canadians about the global forces which shape modern reality. Through this understanding, we aim to encourage Canadians to become active global citizens.
- The Global Education Committee of Jamaican Self-Help organizes a variety of activities to help Canadians understand some of the interconnected global issues related to Jamaica and Canada, such as poverty, economics, gender, cultural diversity and racism, and the environment.
- We welcome all interested individuals or groups to become a part of our education programme!

OUR ACTIVITIES
|
- Jamaican Self-Help organizes educational trips to Jamaica which focus on experiential learning about issues facing Jamaicans and how Canadians can become involved in international development. These trips form the basis of our educational programme.
- Jamaican Self-Help also works with other local groups to provide information on global concerns and organize special educational events, in order to bring the issues facing Jamaicans to the people of the Peterborough area.
- Through memberships, networking, and promotional materials, JSH advocates for global debt reduction and other changes towards a more equitable world.

EXPERIENCES IN JAMAICA
|
- Global education awareness trips are led by experienced volunteers and staff in Canada and Jamaica. Specific trips are determined on an annual basis, based on public interest and the capacity of our organization.
- Trips are organized for youth/high school groups. A special Summer School programme is suitable for teachers or those with teaching experience.
- Trips are generally 2 weeks in length, and most activities take place in Kingston, the capital city. The programme includes briefing sessions prior to departure, volunteer placements as well as speakers and other educational activities in Jamaica, and post-trip activities. The cost for the programme is approximately $2,100 per person and includes airfare, accomodations and programme activities. All participants must complete an application form and interview prior to acceptance in the programme.
- For more information, please contact the Jamaican Self-Help office.
