Community & Rural Development Institutional Strengthening
The United Nations reported that a study by A. Harriott shows the homicide rate in Jamaica to be four times higher than the world rate. There is also an alarming rate of domestic violence. Jamaican Self-Help (JSH) and its Jamaican partners know that involving individuals, particularly the youth, in sustainable community projects will help decrease the violence and provide opportunities for positive social development.

JSH supports community development projects that allow Jamaican citizen organizations to plan and implement effective activities to meet the needs of the community. Youth oriented projects include improving the physical condition of the schools, improving outdoor play areas, and supporting youth sporting activities and clubs. Some health oriented projects include workshops and seminars on topics such as nutrition, sanitation, immunization, violence against women and STDs.

JSH's Rural Development Programme is directed at increasing farm income so that young or new farmers will be able to remain in farming and earn a viable livelihood, rather than moving to the city. This functions to decrease poverty in the rural sector. This programme also assists in diverting rural Jamaicans from moving to inner-city communities. More Information. . .

Jamaican Self-Help (JSH) works with several sister organizations in Jamaica that are recognized as institutional partners.

The institutional strengthening aspect of the JSH programme focuses on capacity-building and management development of JSH in Canada. The capacity-building plan also involves specific development of citizen organizations in the Jamaican communities of Mona Common and White Wing.

Institutional strengthening does not include ongoing administrative costs for JSH in Canada.

Institutional strengthening is an essential component of JSH's development initiatives in that it aims to empower Jamaican communities to plan and implement effective activities that meet their own needs. This will lead to improved programme management in the focus communities. More Information. . .
