*$10 gives a Jamaican child tutoring in reading or math*

Basic literacy and numeracy are fundamental skills for a child to develop her full potential. Jamaican Self-Help programmes offer children support in overcoming barriers to learning through a range of activities, from after-school literacy classes to social development through sports and the arts.

*$20 offers reproductive health care to a young mother*

Almost 25% of Jamaican girls have their first child before the age of 18. This JSH programme provides young women with information, counselling and basic health care on issues of family planning, STD’s and HIV/AIDS, as well as pre-natal and post-natal check-ups.

*$25 gives parenting workshops and support to a mother or father*
Many Jamaican parents struggle with illiteracy, unemployment, unstable homes, and a lack of hope and support. This JSH programme offers information, access to resources, and an opportunity for parents and caregivers to share experiences, and act on positive alternatives.

 
 

 

*$45 provides vocational & life skills training for an at-risk youth*

Jamaican youth in inner-city communities struggle with poverty, alienation and violence. Many drop out of school at a young age. This JSH programme offers youth a chance to learn the basic trade and life skills needed to find employment and become productive members of their communities.

*$100 offers peace building activities to inner-city youth*
Inner-city communities in Jamaica face high instability and poverty mixed with violence, often involving young men. This JSH programme aims to provide alternative community wide activities for youth, such as kite-flying competitions or friendly soccer matches, that bring residents together with the goal of building understanding and respect.

*$150 provides library services for inner-city youth*
Inner-city communities in Jamaica face high instability and poverty sometimes mixed with violence. It is often difficult for students to travel to libraries or other places outside of the community to do homework or research in order to succeed in school. This JSH programme supports efforts to provide accessible local spaces for youth and others within the community
